January 29th, 2010

You may still remember how exciting you are when you go to kindergarten or first grade for the first time. As a child, you are naturally curious, and everything is new and fun to you, so you are eager to learn them. However, as time goes by, when you leave elementary school or junior high or high school, your enthusiasm of studying becomes less and less.

What happened during these years? Why you lose interest in studying? It is because you are not interested in every subject that you are taught to learn. And not all children will enjoy the same things at school. Some think it is interesting while others may feel boring. So sometimes, you may feel you are forced to spend a lot of time learning and memorizing knowledge that you are not even interest in. Besides, we may not have a good way for children to learn. This can cause extra strain on your eyes which may lead to straining of your eyes.

Straining your eyes is a very bad habit that starts when you learn in bad way. Once we have these bad habits without realizing the harmful, it can cause ailments later in life or even permanent damage to your eyes.

So we need to find a better way for children to learn(The Development of Children’s Vision). According to the Bates Method discovered by a famous eye doctor Dr. William Bates, when you look at familiar objects, your eyes will relax, and when you look at new information it put strain on your eyes. So Dr. William Bates created a large chart with common shapes and letters on it, put it in front of the classroom, and encouraged children to look at those familiar shapes on the chart whenever they felt their eyes tired. In this way, Dr. William Bates gave the children chances to relax their eyes. Once this method was introduced into a few schools and it did make a vast improvement of their vision. However, this method was banished by the board because it was thought to be too distracting that may interrupt children studying. So far, China is the only country that still uses these methods to help children relax their eyes.
