Classification of esotropia

When someone’s eyes turn inward, we call it “cross-eyed” or esotropia. It is the opposite of exotropia. Actually, esoptropia with both eyes is just one kind of squint. People with esotropia may squint with just one eye, either the right esotropia or the left esotropia. We call it alternating esotropia. In this case, patient has less possibility to develop an amblyopia because both eyes receive visual stimulation. Esotropias can be concomitant or incomitant. In concomitant squint, the deviation dose not change with the direction of gaze, while in incomitant squint, the deviation is affected by the direction of gaze. The former type is much more common, and typically begins at the ages of 2 to 4 years.
